With spring comes lots and lots of wildflowers to carpet the hills in a myriad of beautiful colors. Especially after a good rainy winter. One merely needs to go to Griffith Park or even Baldwin Hills to see yellow and orange wildflowers carpeting the hillsides.
There are great spots off the 5 FWY in Gorman and Santa Clarita, Lancaster and many many more.
To seea great field of wild California poppies (our state flower) nothing beats the California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster. They do charge to walk the trails of the preserve but if the flowers are blooming they do not seem to adhere to the borders set by the county surveyor.
In fact many times the bloom is even better a little further up the road where you can just pull over and be in a field of orange poppies.

The wild flowers bloom earliest in the desert and as you move closer to the coast they bloom later and later in Spring.
Right now the Theodore Payne Foundation is in full bloom and makes for a great small walk and an easy way to see lots of color.
