La Brea Tar Pits & Page Museum

The La Brea Tar Pits is a great place to picnic and let the kids run around anytime but the George C. Page Museum on the ground is fantastic for seeing lots and lots of fossils. The museum is also free on the first Tuesday of every month.

We will let the pictures do the talking but it is important to know about Zed.

Zed is a huge mammoth they found in the La Brea Tar Pits right behind LACMA. He was only discovered recently and was kept a secret while they excavated all the bones.

Inside the museum you can see technicians and various experts cleaning the fossils which make up Zed.

The larger pieces are stored in the museum displays and when all of Zed’s bones are cleaned off and prepared they will put him together.

At the excavation pits on the grounds west of the museum you can see fossils being excavated by paleontologists and excavation pit displays.
